How to Handle a Fake or Unfair Google Review
Sooner or later, most businesses get a review that feels unfair — a competitor, a case of mistaken identity, or someone who was never actually a customer. It's infuriating. But how you handle it matters more than the review itself, because future customers are watching.
Step 1: Don't fire back
An angry, defensive reply does more damage than the fake review. Take a breath. Your goal is to look like the calm, reasonable professional — that's who earns trust, even when you're in the right.
Step 2: Reply calmly and factually
A measured public reply reassures everyone reading, even if the review stays up. State the facts without accusations:
“Terrible service, would never recommend.”
Thank you for the feedback. We take this seriously, but we're unable to find any record of a visit or order under this name. If you've been a customer and had a poor experience, we genuinely want to make it right — please reach out to us at hello@example.com.
“Worst place ever. Scammers.”
We're sorry you feel this way, though this review doesn't match any interaction we can find in our records. We'd welcome the chance to understand and resolve any genuine concern — please contact us directly so we can help.
Step 3: Report it for removal
If the review violates Google's policies — spam, a competitor, hate speech, off-topic, or someone who was never a customer — report it. In your Google Business Profile, open the review, click the three dots, and choose "Report review." Removal isn't guaranteed or fast, so don't rely on it alone.
Step 4: Bury it with real reviews
The most reliable defense is a steady stream of genuine, recent reviews. One unfair 1-star matters far less when it's surrounded by twenty honest 5-stars. Keep asking happy customers.
